CAR-BUYING QUESTIONS

Does a dirty car get a lower trade-in offer?

A dirty car doesn't change the facts about its condition, but it can affect how an appraiser judges it. Stains, odors and clutter can make a car look neglected and lead to deductions for reconditioning. A thorough wash and vacuum, or an inexpensive detail, helps the appraiser see the real condition and may prevent unnecessary knocks. Smoke and pet odors are especially costly to remove, so addressing them can be worthwhile.
