CAR-BUYING QUESTIONS

What does 'as is' mean on a used car?

As is means the dealer is not offering a warranty, so you're responsible for any repairs once you buy the car, even shortly after. This is indicated on the FTC Buyers Guide posted on the window. Some states limit or prohibit as-is sales or provide implied warranties, so rules vary. Because there's no dealer warranty, an independent pre-purchase inspection and a vehicle history check are especially valuable when buying as is.

General information, not legal or financial advice; rules vary by state and lender.
