CAR-BUYING QUESTIONS
What if my car has a problem right after I buy it?
Contact the seller right away, describe the problem in writing and keep copies. If the car is new or still under factory warranty, a franchised dealer for that brand should handle covered defects. If it is used, check the Buyers Guide to see whether it was sold with a warranty or as is, and check any dealer warranty or return policy. Look for open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls. For unresolved disputes, your state attorney general's consumer office can help.
