CAR-BUYING QUESTIONS

Why are there so many fees on a car purchase?

Car purchases combine government charges, which fund titling, registration and taxes, with dealer charges for paperwork and any extra products. Each state sets its own taxes and fees, and dealers set their own doc fees and add-ons, so the list can feel long. The simplest way to stay in control is to compare the single out-the-door number and ask for each fee to be explained. On OffLot, each vehicle page shows an estimated total under "What this vehicle really costs."
