CAR-BUYING QUESTIONS

What affects my car's trade-in value?

Your trade-in value mostly comes down to year, make, model, trim, mileage and condition. Dealers also weigh accident and title history, service records, color and options, how many keys you have, and how quickly that model sells in your area. Local demand matters a lot: a 4x4 truck may be worth more in a snowy state than in a warm one. Finally, the dealer has to recondition and resell the car for a profit, so trade-in offers usually land below retail asking prices.
