CAR-BUYING QUESTIONS

Why do EVs charge slower after 80 percent?

To protect the battery, an EV reduces charging power as the battery gets fuller, so the last 20 percent can take nearly as long as getting from low to 80 percent. Cell temperature and voltage limits drive this charging curve. On road trips, it is usually faster overall to stop more often and charge to around 80 percent than to wait for 100 percent. At home, many manufacturers recommend a daily charge limit below 100 percent; check your owner's manual.
