CAR-BUYING QUESTIONS

Do used cars have open recalls?

Many do. Federal law generally doesn't require used-car dealers or private sellers to fix open recalls before selling, though some states and many dealers do. Check any VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you buy. Recall repairs are typically free at an authorized dealer for that brand, even for later owners. OffLot's Open lot mode reminds you to ask about open recalls before you commit.
