CAR-BUYING QUESTIONS
How can I check a used car's history for free?
Several free tools help. NHTSA's site (nhtsa.gov/recalls) shows open recalls by VIN. The National Insurance Crime Bureau's VINCheck can flag reported theft or total loss. The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (vehiclehistory.gov) lists approved providers that offer low-cost title-brand checks. Many dealers also provide a paid history report for free. On OffLot, the Open lot mode checklist reminds you to ask for history and service records.
