CAR-BUYING QUESTIONS

Which car fees are government fees and which are dealer fees?

Government fees typically include sales or use tax, title, registration, license plates, and in some places inspection or tire and emissions fees. Dealer fees are charges the dealership sets, such as the documentation fee, prep or reconditioning fees, and add-ons like etching or nitrogen. Government fees aren't negotiable; dealer fees and add-ons often are, at least as part of the total price. OffLot's Open lot mode prompts you to ask the dealer to separate government fees from dealer fees in writing.
